John Hipkins

Propagation & Perennial Manager

John is from Tacoma Park, Maryland. He earned an A.S. degree in Turfgrass Management from Horry Georgetown Tech. and a B.S. in Ornamental Horticulture from Eastern Kentucky University. He is a member of the International Plant Propagators’ Society, a SCNLA Certified Nursery Professional and a Clemson University Master Gardener.

Why did you choose a career in the horticultural industry?

I grew up with a love of the outdoors. A career-ending accident while working as a racehorse farm manager forced me to reinvent myself. I used the study of horticulture to help change my life in a positive direction.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

To observe the miracle of life. As Parsons Nursery’s propagator, I witness a plant’s intrinsic desire to live, by regenerating itself from a small part of the whole.

What is your favorite tree, shrub or perennial?

There is such grace and beauty in so many plants I cannot single out just one.
